Five volunteers of the Red Crescent are dead and three remain missing. The tragedy occurred while they were distributing food in the city of Bara in Sudan.

Five volunteers of the Sudanese Red Crescent (SRC) were killed on October 27 while serving in the city of Bara in Northern Kordofan province in central Sudan. Three other volunteers are still missing.

The Sudanese Red Crescent team was on an official mission distributing food in the city of Bara. Its members were clearly marked with Red Crescent vests, intended to ensure their full protection, and they had identification issued by the local branch.

Any attack on humanitarian teams is unacceptable. We strongly reiterate our call for unwavering respect for the symbols of the Red Cross and Red Crescent and the important humanitarian actions they represent

- emphasized the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in an official statement.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent, including the Polish Red Cross, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and their friends and colleagues. It was underscored that, in light of the deaths of the humanitarians in service, the organization is "horrified, shocked, and deeply saddened".

In 2025, as many as 25 Red Cross and Red Crescent workers and volunteers from around the world lost their lives while carrying out their humanitarian tasks. Since the beginning of the conflict in Sudan, the Sudanese Red Crescent has lost 21 colleagues in service.

The escalating internal conflicts in Sudan for over 30 years led to mass protests in 2019, driven by the economic crisis, corruption, and repression. As a result of the struggle for power, in April 2023, an outbreak of internal armed conflict occurred. The fighting, which has been ongoing for over 2 years, exacerbated by climate factors (mainly droughts), has caused a massive humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Currently, over 30 million residents of this country need humanitarian assistance, and 21 million are suffering from hunger.
