Earthquake in Morocco in 2023
The Polish Red Cross, responding to the catastrophic flood in Morocco, immediately stood ready to provide assistance to the most affected.
General description
The Polish Red Cross, responding to the devastating earthquake in Morocco, immediately stood ready to provide aid to the most affected. The support, carried out with determination, went beyond providing basic resources – it was also a symbol of hope and solidarity. Rescuers worked shoulder to shoulder with survivors, and the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) emphasized that rebuilding the destroyed communities and infrastructure would take many years.

Need
Fatalities:
The flood killed more than 2,100 people, and this number rose due to difficult terrain conditions and destroyed infrastructure.
Ranni:
Over 2,400 people sustained serious injuries, mainly due to building collapses and landslides.
Destroyed infrastructure:
The flood destroyed hundreds of homes and key elements of infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and water delivery systems, cutting off many villages in mountainous regions from the outside world.
Lack of basic resources:
The affected people needed shelter, access to clean water, food, and sanitary supplies to prevent further deterioration of their health situation.
How did we help?
Nearly 42,000 PLN has been raised for the organization of temporary shelters, provision of drinking water, and sanitation supplies.
Delivery of material aid:
The Polish Red Cross has reported readiness to supply essential items such as tents, blankets, and other materials for temporary shelters.
International cooperation:
Thanks to the collaboration with the Moroccan Red Crescent, assistance reached those who needed it the most. Local rescuers conducted evacuation operations, supported by funds provided by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
What were we collecting for?
- Organization of temporary shelters for people who have lost their homes.
- Provision of drinking water and sanitation supplies to prevent the spread of diseases.
- Distribution of food packages, especially in regions cut off from supplies.
- Procurement of material goods, such as tents and blankets, for temporary shelters.
The importance of donor engagement
Every zloty donated by individual donors was of immense importance in saving lives and providing essential humanitarian aid. Thanks to their support, the Polish Red Cross was able to effectively respond to the needs of those affected by the disaster, and the aid could reach on time, which was crucial in dramatic circumstances.
