Flood in Libya in 2023

During the flood in Libya in September 2023, which caused massive destruction and the death of several thousand people, the Red Cross played a key role in coordinating support for the affected.

Catastrophic flooding in Libya

The largest flood in the 21st century hit Libya in September 2023. The effects of the element were primarily affected in the north of the country with the city of Darna on the Mediterranean Sea. After the cataclysm, the lack of water was a huge problem - many of its sources were polluted, the element carried bodies of the dead, destroyed cemeteries. There was a lack of food, medical equipment, medicines. Thousands of people were left without a roof over their heads.

Need

The breaking of two dams in the city of Derna led to a huge wave of water that destroyed entire neighborhoods, sweeping away people and demolishing houses.

Over 30,000 people have been displaced, creating an urgent need for shelter, water, food, and hygiene supplies.

The number of fatalities has surpassed 5,300 people, and over 10,000 individuals have been reported missing, which has made rescue operations exceptionally difficult and complicated.

Some areas have been completely cut off from the world, which further complicates rescue and humanitarian efforts.

How did we help?

Program "Restoring Family Bonds":

  • The Polish Red Cross launched special contact lines to assist people searching for missing family members.
  • Thanks to this initiative, many individuals were able to find information about their loved ones, which was crucial in the face of mass displacements and disappearances.

What were we saving for?

The funds raised by the Polish Red Cross were allocated to:

  • Purchasing drinking water, food, and hygiene products for the affected individuals.
  • Providing medical support to flood victims.
  • Enabling the operation of local rescue organizations, such as the Libyan Red Crescent.
  • Organizing the "Restoring Family Links" program to assist in finding missing loved ones.

The importance of donor engagement

Every zloty donated by individual donors was of immense importance in saving lives and providing essential humanitarian aid. Thanks to their support, the Polish Red Cross was able to effectively respond to the needs of those affected by the disaster, and the aid could reach on time, which was crucial in dramatic circumstances.
