Today marks an important anniversary for international humanitarian law (IHL). 18 years ago, on December 8, 2005, the III Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions was adopted, establishing an additional protected emblem, the red crystal.
On this day, the Ukrainian Red Cross, together with other Red Cross Societies, such as the Polish Red Cross, wishes to draw attention to its ongoing efforts to prevent the misuse of the red cross emblem by engaging in a one-day cross-border social media campaign to protect the emblem.
The red cross, red crescent, and red crystal are recognized under the Geneva Conventions as symbols of neutrality and protection in armed conflicts. They protect medical personnel and clergy of armed forces and indicate the affiliation of persons or objects to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
During the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Red Cross has observed over 100 cases of cross-border misuse of the emblem. Both foreign and local companies, as well as organizations providing humanitarian assistance, involved in evacuating, rescuing animals, and other volunteer services, are misusing the emblems, among other things by placing them on their vehicles. The Polish Red Cross has also recorded many such cases.
Any improper use of the emblem undermines its protective value and damages respect for it during armed conflicts. This poses a threat to the lives of those who have the right to use the emblem when providing medical assistance, restricts safe access for Movement personnel, and hinders the delivery of humanitarian aid.
We urge everyone to appreciate the importance of the red cross emblem and help us remind that the use of protected emblems is strictly regulated and all abuse should be prevented.
Together we can make a difference!
